New APIRA Installation in Diakofto, Greece

New APIRA Installation in Diakofto, Greece 2026

During the new APIRA Installation in Diakofto, Greece, we were reminded that wildfire protection starts before the fire.

Another APIRA installation has been completed in Diakofto, Greece, bringing proactive wildfire protection to a building located within one of Greece’s naturally beautiful landscapes. For APIRA, every new installation represents much more than another completed project. It represents a different way of thinking about wildfire protection.

Prepare before the fire. Protect before the emergency.

Wildfires do not allow time for complicated last-minute preparations. When conditions become critical, access may be restricted, electricity may fail, water pressure may become unreliable, and people may already need to evacuate. This is why APIRA is designed around preparedness.

A Building Prepared Before Wildfire Reaches It

The APIRA Wildfire Protection Solution is a pre-installed protection system for houses, buildings, facilities and warehouses, designed to protect vulnerable points of a structure such as windows, doors and other openings. Once installed, the system becomes part of the building’s wildfire preparedness strategy.

It can be deployed in advance, manually or remotely, and does not depend on water, electricity or pumps to provide its protective function. It can also remain deployed when occupants need to leave the property. That distinction matters. Wildfire protection should not begin when flames become visible on the horizon. It should already be there, available to set and installed within minutes!

Why Diakofto Matters

Diakofto lies between the Corinthian Gulf and the mountainous landscape leading toward Kalavryta, in an environment where homes, dense vegetation and natural terrain exist in close proximity. Here, wildfire risk is not an abstract concern. The wider Aigialeia region has repeatedly experienced its consequences first-hand. In July 2007, a major wildfire that began near Kounina swept through parts of Aigialeia, including the areas around Ano Diakofto and Mamousia. The disaster claimed three lives, destroyed homes and property, and burned an estimated 150,000 stremmas — approximately 15,000 hectares — of land.

In 2021, another major wildfire spread through communities around Ziria, Kamares and Lampiri, destroying homes and sending 16 people for medical treatment, including one person who suffered burns. More recently, in July 2023, wildfire once again advanced toward the Diakofto area. Driven by strong winds, the fire moved from Dervenaki toward Diakofto and Akrata, threatening Vytiniotika and forcing evacuations in Trapeza and nearby communities, while firefighters worked through the night to prevent the flames from reaching homes.

These events underline a critical reality: in this part of Greece, wildfire resilience is not simply a theoretical precaution. It is a response to a recurring threat that has reached communities, damaged homes and property and, in the most severe cases, taken human lives. For this reason, preparedness at the building level is becoming an increasingly important part of the wider wildfire-resilience conversation.

The new APIRA installation in Diakofto follows precisely this principle. Rather than waiting for an emergency and attempting to create protection under pressure, the property is prepared in advance with a system designed specifically for wildfire conditions.

Protection begins before the emergency.

Protection Without Depending on Last-Minute Resources

One of the fundamental principles behind APIRA is independence from resources that may become unavailable during an emergency.

APIRA solution does not require:

  • Water
  • Electricity
  • Pumps
  • Foam
  • Chemical extinguishing agents
  • Human presence during the wildfire event

Trained professionals install the system, or the homeowner can complete a short training, and it can be incorporated into both existing and new buildings, making wildfire resilience part of the property itself rather than something that must be assembled when danger approaches. This approach is particularly important when evacuation becomes necessary. People should be able to prioritize their own safety rather than remain behind trying to defend a building.

Tested Protection Where Buildings Are Most Vulnerable

Windows and openings can become critical points during wildfire exposure. APIRA’s fire-performance testing has examined the behavior of its protective configuration under severe fire conditions. During testing, furnace temperatures reached approximately 900°C, while the APIRA system protected the window configuration from direct fire exposure for 36 minutes.

Testing is part of a wider objective: to understand how buildings can be given an additional layer of passive protection against extreme wildfire conditions. Because protecting structures is not only about fighting fire. It is also about making it more difficult for fire to enter them.

From Reaction to Preparedness

For decades, much of the conversation around wildfire has understandably focused on detection, firefighting and emergency response. All three remain essential. But there is another question we must increasingly ask:

How prepared is the building itself before the fire arrives?

APIRA was developed around that question. Our 4P philosophy: Pre-install – Proactive – Protect – Prevent  moves wildfire protection further upstream.

It gives homeowners, architects, engineers, businesses and property managers the opportunity to think about wildfire resilience before an emergency begins. The new installation in Diakofto is another step in that direction. One property at a time. One vulnerable point at a time. One more building prepared before it needs to be.

Building a More Wildfire-Resilient Future

Greece knows wildfires. Our landscapes, communities and homes increasingly require solutions designed for the conditions we are facing today—and those we may face tomorrow. There will never be a single measure capable of eliminating wildfire risk. Effective protection requires prevention, responsible vegetation management, early detection, evacuation planning, firefighting capability and better-prepared buildings working together.

APIRA contributes to that wider system by focusing on the structure itself. Because when wildfire approaches, preparation should already be in place.

APIRA | Always Prepared
Pre-install. Proactive. Protect. Prevent.

Wildfire protection starts before the fire.
